The title of this project reflects the diverse backgrounds and reading levels of my students. Many tried and true texts from the literary canon fail to engage a sizable percentage of my students because young people of color, for example, are unlikely to see themselves or their stories in the pages of these classics. I chose the books on this list for their diverse authorship and varying levels of difficulty so more young readers are validated, celebrated, and engaged. Some requested texts include The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, This Is How It Always Is, Homegoing, The Source of Self-Regard: Selected Essays, Speeches, and Meditations, and Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. Additionally, I have added some Yoga Meditation Cushions, a MegaTimer, and a Blue Snowflake USB Microphone to allow students to work comfortably and in multiple mediums in our shared classroom.
