My goal is to allow students to work through their issues and come up with their own plans and practices on how to deal with stress and function. Instead of suspending and harsh penalization for discipline, I want to hold young adults accountable for their actions much like they would in the real world. They must understand that every action has a reaction and if they do not understand how to think through those functions and navigate accordingly, they will become a statistic. Second Chances is a program that will keep these kids thinking, and working together to find solutions! I want to assign binders to repeat offenders to build a relationship between themselves and their conflict. As they accomplish goals to distance themselves from their issues they can build their binders to show off their hard work. I would be using the iPad to build slides and pictures to empower them, I’ve learned with restorative justice it’s almost like a twelve step program, the more the students see their successes the more they will try to aspire towards the right instead of the wrong.
