The materials provided will help the students in our special education program to meet individual sensory needs to enable them to better access their learning styles. Some students get overwhelmed and overstimulated by noise or large numbers in a typical classroom setting. This room would provide an educational space with items intended to calm our students before an educational expectation is given. These calming items and techniques range from using equipment that requires large body movements such as a swing, pushing heavy/weighted objects or jumping on a mini trampoline. Fine motor skill development can be addressed using hand weights, pincer grasp items/toys, building with variety of blocks or other manipulatives, and offering different ways of handwriting using larger utensils and different surfaces. When these individual sensory needs are met for our students, learning happens for longer periods of time and with less disruptions or behaviors. Our students are able to become more engaged and productive in learning when their sensory needs are addressed first. By providing our students with sensory equipment, it allows them to develop calming techniques and discover tools they can use to assist them in becoming successful in everyday situations including school, home and community environments.
