Some students have a hard time regulating themselves in the classroom setting. These students can feel sensory overload which can lead to restlessness, fidgeting, and off task behaviors that prevent the student from learning. These behaviors occur due to lack of self calming strategies. Self calming strategies can include deep breaths, counting to 10, requesting a break, etc. Self calming strategies can be taught, when student is in a positive state of mind, and thus increase the amount of time a student is engaged in learning. I imagine this sensory space as a quiet, uncluttered area in the classroom where students can calm their senses, refocus, and return to the lesson when a timer sounds. Seating will be comfortable, with pleasing textures. There will be books, legos, play-dough, white boards, coloring pages, and sensory activities that students can choose from. I will put up visual cues for students, promoting calming strategies, as well as expectations for the use of the sensory space. In addition, the CD and Cassette Player will be used in conjunction with headphones to provide recorded calming strategies, music and affirmations. The timer is used to ensure students use the space to refocus and ultimately return to their seats, ready to learn. This sensory space will be available to any student who would benefit from a quiet area to calm, refocus and return to learning. Once a student is calm, direct instruction on calming strategies will be provided so that they can gain skills that help them be successful and productive students. The goal of the sensory space will be to increase student time on task as they develop and master these self calming skills.
