I am a first year elementary teacher in Providence Public Schools and am building everything from scratch. My main focus is building a classroom library for the children that encourages and inspires them to read. My students gravitate to bilingual books and it is important to expose the students to books that are in their native language. Exposing the students to books in their native language gives them access to their L1 (Native language). When students can read in their native language and become fluent, those reading skills transfer over when they learn in English. Having English and Spanish books in the class is essential to connecting with the students' multicultural backgrounds as well as giving them access to their native language versus only having books in English. I have found that native Spanish speaking children are usually sheltered from having Spanish books in the mainstream classrooms, but my approach and philosophy on teaching encourages fluency in both their native language and English. Outcomes of this project will include students being engaged in lessons by having reading materials they can relate to and gain valuable comprehension and reading skills through. The classroom carpet is something that is very important for the classroom! Having a carpeted space allows a common, collective and comforting gathering space where the class and I can come together as one whole group and discuss lessons and even do morning meeting in unison. Also, having stools in the classroom for flexible seating can offer the students a unique way of seating that increases their desire to learn.
