Our classroom is in need of upgraded seating and furniture for Kindergarten students. The traditional classrooms of the past do not fit the needs of a 21st century students. Our current students in our special education classroom need accessible seating with multiple ways to sit due to some of their physical limitations as well as their learning styles. Our classroom currently only has traditional seating for kindergarteners. These new seats will give us an opportunity to help attend to our student’s specific needs with the many different ways to sit in the class during lessons. When students have the option to sit on a wobble seat, a comfy floor cushion, or a comfy floor seat instead of a traditional classroom chair they have an enhanced focus on the lesson. Another way we help enhance our students learning is by learning through play and modeling in centers during the school day. We emphasize social interactions and social skills that are difficult for our students with many opportunities throughout the school day for pretend play. With all of the pretend materials our students will have access to a world that they are not typically familiar with due to their diagnosis of Autism. Students participating in play sessions are shown how to use toys with a peer, given different center choices through the week they are able to pick centers like the Lego center and work together to build a structure or car handing each other pieces, etc. As well as the play house center where they can cook and care for their baby dolls learning through play as staff models how to interact with the play items and peers. With your support to our students will have an edge on learning and be given more opportunities to grow!
