A key indicator of a student's success is their level of vocabulary. By age 3 children in professional families will have heard more than 30 million words, while children in impoverished families will hear only 10 million. Research supports the need for students from low-income families to have extra resources to help with the language development that they are often in dire need of. By having two class iPads at the ready, my students will be able to quickly and efficiently look-up new vocabulary and ideas they encounter in class readings - a hallmark of a strong independent reader. Notebooks and tape will assist students in creating interactive notebooks that will hold their class materials, track their learning, and serve as a "living textbook".
