My students are creative. Their ability to innovatively solve problems is truly a gift. My students are passionate. They have dreams for their future and plans to achieve them. And my students are self-sufficient. Their talent to manage large tasks independently would inspire almost anyone. They're a diverse group, who come from various incomes and challenges at home -- a place where reading books isn't encouraged. Our school is centered in the middle of our city, so most of my students represent the low socioeconomic community. They are reluctant to read, especially when everything they've ever read described a life they've never known. However, when given the opportunity to choose a novel that reflects their life, my students become engaged and are more likely to be active independent readers in the future.
