In my seven years of teaching, I have always stuck to the same morning routine- the students come in, they greet me at the door (when I am available), they put their materials away, and they start their morning work. However, this is not what was best for our learning community. As students struggled on morning work, it pulled me away from the door where I was greeting students as they walked in. This caused me to not greet everyone who walked through my door; which took away from student relationships. These games and learning experiences would provide my students with morning choice. Instead of coming into the classroom and maybe greeting me and then starting morning work, my students would be promised a proper morning greeting and would come in to a choice activity. For example they would play Get to Know You Jenga, or build a favorite summer memory with Legos. Morning choice would allow my students to build relationships with one another, be creative, and they would come into a stress-free morning environment. Who doesn't love choice? Who doesn't love coming in and playing games. No longer will students wonder the hallways, slowly delaying their time to get to the classroom. Our room will be a special place to be in the morning where all students will be greeted and welcomed with creativity and choice. Lastly these games can also be tied to create learning objectives through gamification, which studies prove to be very impactful in student learning. I love being creativity by providing my students with learning opportunities that can be played through games or STEM experiences. Please consider donating to our project and help us build a community where relationships are fostered through morning exploration!
