Giving students, who have difficulty learning math, a chance to visually create or see math grouping, matching or representing concepts allows an added layer of support for these learners. Manipulating objects in a math lesson allows little hands to engage in their learning. Using more modalities builds a better experience for learning. Bright colors hold attention and support visualization of the concept being taught. A lesson projected to a larger group can be more visually appealing, and the small group sets of materials allow for grouping of students or individual engagement. Research supports the use of manipulatives to support learning.
