As a first-year teacher, my classroom library leaves much to be desired. My students deserve more than “a good start”. So, I carefully compiled a list of books that feature the most interesting and diverse characters for my students to engage with, relate to and learn from. Many of these titles are deemed “essential” by experienced teachers and I would feel incredibly grateful to be able to provide them for some very deserving students! Journal-writing is also a staple in the classroom because it helps each student develop and find their voice as they continue to navigate the world around them. Because of this, I plan to buy each of my 60 students a composition notebook. I am asking for a chunk of this to be funded in this project, as it would greatly help me accomplish this goal. We are a Montessori school, so our classrooms our student-centered with a strong sense of community. In our classroom, this starts as a community of readers and writers. I see students connecting with each other through literature, recommending books through passionate book talks, and sharing stories like the meaningful presents they are. This grows into our larger, multi-faceted projects, but it all hinges upon this choice reading. The classroom library and these journals are the foundation.
