As middle schoolers, my students are constantly questioning the world and their place in it but I do not want them to question their place in my classroom. This year, as a school, we are setting aside a half hour of silent reading time where everyone in the building will just sit down and read. While I am very excited about this new initiative, as a math teacher I have a very small library of books. I want my library to reflect every facet of my students' identities because they deserve to see themselves in the literature that they read so that they can begin to see themselves as readers and have their stories and life experiences validated. My students deserve to read stories about people who look like them, sound like them, and have similar beliefs and experiences as they do so that they feel like they belong; that they are seen and heard. Having a diverse selection of books not only benefits the students who identify with that story, it helps all of my students expand their beliefs. As one of my idols always says, "books are a safe place to explore scary topics" and I know my students have lots of questions about everything that they encounter in life but some topics feel unsafe to bring up. They deserve to have their questions answered and to be able to talk about the hard topics because ignoring things like race, religion, and sexual identity and expression only creates more problems and divides communities further. With new books that reflect their identities and their inquisitive nature, I can't wait to see my students flourish this year as avid readers and grow as scholars and future change makers.
