Many of my students do not have access to engaging books at their reading level at their homes. Being a new teacher, my classroom library is limited and my students need access to different genres, stories, characters, and topics. I want my students to be excited about choosing what books they will bring home for their nightly independent reading at home. When students have more choice over the books they read, they can independently foster their own love for reading as they read topics and stories they are interested in.
When students have choices they can make in their own learning, they become more invested and engaged.
Students also need to have hands-on experiences with math materials and manipulatives to grow in their number sense. I want my students to have more choice in the materials they choose to work with in math as they count and group items in different ways. First graders love bridging their imagination to their learning, and having more engaging math materials can help them to foster their own creativity while deepening their number sense along the way.
