For sixth grade social studies, our curriculum places a heavy emphasis on a global perspective. My students will learn about Latin America, Australia, Europe, and Canada over the course of the school year. For most of my students, these places are vague ideas without any connection to location, culture, language, or politics. Having a room filled with maps, posters, globes, and other resources that provide visual learning aids will allow my students to get that much closer to understanding the faraway places we teach them about. I also place a heavy emphasis on improving their geography skills, which have declined across all age groups in the last few decades, as we become more reliant on GPS and less familiar with reading maps. Hopefully, a vibrant room filled with different images from across the world can help change that.
