Last year, our state changed the rules for using ECA (extracurricular activity) tax credit funds making it no longer possible to use the allocated funds for essential accessories for band instruments. This means the students must purchase their own clarinet/saxophone reeds, valve oils, swabs, etc. or I would have to purchase them out of pocket (which I have done in the past). Our school is a Title I school and many of my students' families cannot afford their own instruments and the accessories needed to maintain and play their instruments. To ensure an equitable band program, it is my goal to never have to turn away a student because their family cannot afford to participate.
