It is the first year as a Middle School. Although we, as a school team, are ready for this amazing challenge, our middle school building is not. In fact, the first year we will live in the four portable classrooms formerly used for specialty classes and offices — quite tight to say the least. Nonetheless, the students are excited to be pioneering the middle school of their home — the elementary school. There will be a closed in patio that unites the four small classrooms where the students will have their lockers, transition to other classes/subjects, recess lounge, etc. The basic furniture has been provided, but the middle school “atmosphere“ hasn’t. I was hoping to make this more comfortable and welcoming to the students by providing a more age-appropriate feel by adding plants, bookshelves, big cushions/beanbag chairs. The students would benefit greatly by the comforting ambiance where they can read, do homework, work in groups. They’ll have an opportunity to get a middle school feel of independence and responsibility having their own space apart from the elementary school and not just a makeshift “hallway” — though we still share the same building. It can become a place where they explore a middle school environment and the responsibilities and freedoms that come with it even though they are not yet in their permanent middle school home.
