Studies show that the learning environment in the classroom is closely linked to student success. My current classroom has tile floors and hard plastic chairs with metal legs that scrape on the floors when students move them. Research shows that students, especially males because of the shape of their pelvic bones, have difficulty finding it comfortable to sit in hard chairs for long periods of time. As they become more uncomfortable, they become more distracted. Funds are being requested for the purchase of inflatable chair pads for chairs in order to increase student comfort and therefore reduce distraction. Tennis ball type cushions for noisy chair legs are also requested. Every time a student moves a chair, the noise can distract other students and repeated movement ruins the finish on tile floors. The cushions will make for a much quieter working environment.
