The ability for students to access both research texts and choice texts, at their level, is an essential and daily function of our third-grade classroom. In order for students to learn best, they need to have access to texts that fit the topic of study and be able to choose among both literary and informational texts. Most importantly, students need to choose texts that are at an appropriate independent reading level. When students find a text that is "just right," the possibilities are endless. Students become voracious readers by soaking in new vocabulary and thus maximize their learning potential. They also learn to love reading. However, in order for students to have that choice, they need new and exciting books that are available within the classroom. One of our largest units of study this year is all about the world of frogs, and students need to be able to read about frogs, amphibians, and marshes outside of instructional time. They can only do this with the availability of texts that are currently unavailable in our school, and the local library.
