These books and notebooks will help to foster personal reading and writing in and outside of class. We can build our classroom library with texts that reflect the real world and lives our students inhabit. Students will read and write when given the resources to take ownership with engaging choices that reflect who they are and where they live. Finding new titles that tell the stories of struggle, survival, identity and voice is key to engaging readers. Having colorful notebooks that are not the usual "school" type also encourage students to write their own stories and value their own voices.
