Middle schoolers can't help but love graphic novels. Reluctant readers forget their normal reactions and get lost in the pictures. Active readers can find incredible literature in graphic novel form. But my students (and all students) need to talk about what they read.
High-appeal, quality books can fuel conversations that enable students to build their abilities to express themselves, which is critical for English Language Learners. Book clubs, online or not, are great vehicles for middle schoolers to find a place where they belong, and where they can have meaningful interaction that they might not get elsewhere. During this distance learning time, it is one small touch with the community. These books provide windows to new ideas and realities that can only help them grow.
With the majority of these books, I plan on leading online book clubs with my ESL students, and any other student at the school who wishes to join. Other books are for students with special interests. Thereafter we'll talk through the big ideas in Zoom book club meetings. I can't wait, and neither can they!
