Unfortunately, my school doesn't have a library. But my students deserve more than just the books in the classroom collection that I inherited when I moved to this school last year. They deserve a wide range of books on a wide range of topics written by a wide range of people. They deserve easy access to the books that people don't donate (because they are too good). They deserve books that are written by and about people who look like them. They deserve more than what I can purchase to refresh my library. With these books, my students will work to build their independent reading practice throughout the semester (and in future years). They will use these stories to learn about themselves and what it means to be human in our increasingly complex world. These books will be loved, talked about, and fought over.
