For children living in poverty, food insecurity is one of the multitude of obstacles that interferes with their education. While these children receive free breakfast and lunch at school, for many children this is the only food they get. How can we expect our students to meet the rigors of today’s curriculum when their minds are on when they will eat next? Our school has a weekend food program provided by a local food bank, however, the food provided is of very poor quality and unappealing to young children. For years, our cafeteria has been forced to throw away all extra food that was prepared but not served. This year, for the first time, cafeterias in our state will be able to instead package this food to send home with our students. By having disposable food storage containers, we will be able to send home kid-friendly, nutritious meals for our children. Most teachers use their own money to purchase snacks to give to students who don’t have anything to eat. However, teachers cannot afford to supply this on a daily basis. My vision is to start a Snack Pack program. Teachers would identify students who never have snack. These children will be provided with a drawstring bag containing two weeks' worth of snacks. The bag will be kept in the child's classroom. At snack time the child will be able to select a snack from his/her bag and enjoy snack like everyone else. At the end of the two week period, the bags will be turned back in to be refilled.
