Most students do not embrace reading at all! However, if they are provided with choices for how and what they read, reading will no longer be such a dreadful experience. Creating semi-private reading corners grants students the autonomy they search for. Second, it also gives them time and space to be appropriately social and academically collaborative with their peers. Lastly, flexible grouping within literature circles and book clubs gives students multiple opportunities to develop every modality of their literacy; listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I believe whoever is doing the reading, writing, listening, and speaking is the one who's learning.
