Think of how it feels- even as an adult- to get a new book. It is exciting. It is exhilarating. It is fresh and new! Here's a secret: it's even MORE exciting for first graders! My students will be over the moon to have these new, shiny, high-interest books to read; it will be so exciting to see my students make plans with each other to read a book and pass it on and on and on to friends. These new books will energize our community of readers and I hope you can help spread the magic of books to my first graders! Richard Allington (University of Tennessee- Knoxville) has done research that shows that kids who have access to high-interest books at home make more gains as readers. From my experience as a mom and a teacher, I know that having the right books at the right time can really be a powerful experience in developing reading identity. In order to get better at anything, you practice. Children will be so engaged practicing their reading with these shiny, new, high-interest books. They will not only read these books at school and at home, but they will recommend and chat about these books with other children in our classroom community. Books are the cornerstone of my classroom community. Books can be windows, mirrors, and road maps for children.
