Preserved organisms and dissection specimens will provide my students with real world examples of the animals we are learning about in Zoology. Many of my students have limited experience with animals other than a house pet. Zoology will teach them about the variety of animals on our planet, but digital media does not replace the authenticity of an actual, sometimes living, organism.
How many of us still remember that frog dissection we completed way back in middle or high school? This project helps give my students experiences that they may not otherwise have encountered, enhances their learning, and provides memories that will last a life time. Many will be observing animals that live places they have never traveled, handling live animals for the first time, and enjoy being able to explore and compare structures found in the animal kingdom. Dissection also builds confidence, especially in students who find themselves excelling at a skill they never imagined. Having completed dissections at the high school level will also help them succeed in college courses where these higher level skills are required.
