Ukulele's are a great way to give every student in the music classroom a chance to take ownership over their musical creations, performance, and musical aesthetic. While the guitar can be a daunting instrument for middle school students to learn, the ukulele provides an accessible layout that is easy for any student to pick up. Chords can be learned in a single class period making it fun for students to go out on their own and explore songs they can play along too or even create them selves. My plan is to create a ukulele program where middle school students can have the freedom to express them selves through musical creation. We will do play-a-longs in class with students' favorite songs and songs that peak musical instruction. I intend to provide the tools students will need to play the ukulele and then let students lead the way during group composition activities and Orff based activities. These students have been playing the recorder and keyboard for many years. How great it would be to see the students playing ukuleles at a winter or spring concert with the younger kids playing the recorder and singing. It will be a great way to get the younger grades excited about what is to come as they progress through their education. I believe that the ukulele will make a difference in a students life as it is a personal instrument that does not have to be played the same way by everyone. There is no right way to play a ukulele.
