So far, we’ve worked our way from the land and people before Columbus, the age of exploration, the cooperation and conflict in North America, to settling the colonies. We’re currently in the middle of the road to war where they’re learning all about the events that led up to the war, the different perspectives of people involved in deciding to go to war, and the goals of the Declaration of Independence. They’re only in the middle of their fifth grade social studies journey and still have so much more to learn about, like the American Revolution itself and the development and significance of the U.S Constitution. I’ve come to learn that my students absolutely love learning through simulations, taking part in socratic seminars, conducting research, and performing their own investigations, but nothing compares to the “real” deal. Having an invaluable opportunity to visit a place like Riley’s Farm gives them a chance to relive the struggles of the colonists and see the Revolutionary war up close and personal. They’d have the opportunity to see it first hand, hear it, and feel the sounds of the past hopefully giving them a newfound appreciation of social studies. At Riley’s Farm, they get to take part in educational workshops focusing on the Stamp Act, the Admiralty Court, the Quartering Act, a well regulated militia, the blacksmith, and more. My goal is to make this a wonderful experience that gets them excited to learn more about the Revolutionary war and its impacts on our country. Most importantly, I want them to find a love in history where their faces light up and they’re eager to learn more. I’d love to show my students and parents how much I appreciate them by giving them an experience of a lifetime that they’ll never forget!
