I use picture books as a very critical part of my teaching. My read alouds in class spark conversations about real life. I encourage my students to discuss issues that may be difficult to talk about but are very important. For example, I just read my students the book "We March" and we discussed why people march and protest. We then discussed the Black Lives Matter movement, it was wonderful! I think that the books I read to my students should reflect how racially and culturally diverse they are. I want my students to feel that they are a part of my classroom community and for this reason I need more diverse books in my classroom.
