My project is comprised of two parts. First, I would like to create a cozy and beautiful reading nook for our classroom. Our campus is quite lovely, being nestled atop a hill overlooking a lake and many trees, and our classroom is on the upper floor. As such, we have named our classroom the nest. However, because our class was established at the last minute, the classroom itself is quite bare. We have the essentials, but nothing that makes our room as cozy as our name implies. I hope to create a reading area next to our windows with multiple soft seating options and areas for small groups of students to read comfortably together. The second part of my project involves getting enough books to hold rich literature circles for both grades over the course of the year. Because my 5th graders have already read the books commonly used by the other 4th grade teachers, and my 4th graders will see the standard 5th grade books next year, I need to use books not generally read in my colleagues classrooms. I have selected books that are classic literature for this age group with connections to both the 4th and 5th grade curriculum, as well as books that are proven favorites of 9 to 11 year olds. Having multiple sets of books and a wonderful reading nook will help my students continue to flourish in reading this year and build upon the strong skills and love of reading they already possess. These items will also support students in my classroom for years to come, whether I remain a blended classroom or not.
