My "Build a Clay Bear" lesson was a huge hit with my seventh-grade students last year. I know rising seventh graders will expect the same this year. The lesson focused on different bear species in North America and environmental issues with their habitat. I taught basic hand-building techniques for the head. However, students were encouraged to use their creativity to add accessories to personalize their bear. Kids created all sorts of characters like warrior bear, rainbow bear, classy bear, silly bear, girly bear, and then some standard polar, black, and grizzly bears. The artwork was on display for Project-Based Learning (PBL) Family night, and my students were so proud to show their family their artwork.
