3D printers are one of the biggest school trends of our time. They provide students with hands-on experiences while tapping into engineering design, computational thinking, and authentic problem-solving. This project will help equip our school with a similar experience for students, but with a unique twist! Help me to rebrand our school library into a 21st Century Media Makerspace with a tool that will appeal to ALL students (especially GIRLS) through the connection between STEM and awesome, authentic design. The silhouette machine will give kids the opportunity to create something artistic - a model, a logo, a decal, or any number of products - that has a practical purpose for a young teenager. Middle schoolers will learn about marketing, graphics, and copyright as they actualize an idea to produce something they can keep, use, and feel proud of. Applying elements of programming and design iteration, they will practice spatial reasoning prototyping. As their concept takes shape, they can choose how to utilize their 2D or 3D creation, whether for personal use, community service, entrepreneurship, or just for fun. This is a unique project in that the tools and software haven't been leveraged very often in the classroom. Students will find a relevance to the experience that they won't get from current resources. As we encourage students, and intentionally inspire girls, to find their niche in an increasingly STEM-focused society, our schools should provide experiences that are inventive and cutting-edge (pun intended!)
