Whether we are aware of it or not, most of us have some sensory needs. In some of us, those needs are more prevalent than in others. Some of my students have high sensory needs. These are important to them and help them function on a daily basis. There are many different sensory needs and one particular child may require more than one of those needs to be met. Besides our five senses, there are other sensory preferences that can include balance and movement. Students can be over-sensitive, meaning that a small amount of something will stimulate them and get them worked up. A child can also be under-sensitive, meaning that it takes a lot of a certain sensation to stimulate the child and they will seek out that sensation to feel satiated. Meeting these sensory needs of students is important because it helps them focus and function with more effectiveness not only in the classroom, but also in their everyday lives. By donating to this project, you will be helping me meet the sensory needs of various students and granting them more opportunities to succeed in our classrooms and in their lives. I have seen how meeting sensory needs makes a difference and greatly impacts the cognitive growth of students. By meeting the sensory needs of the students, we are able to integrate them more in activities with their peers in and out of the classroom and have helped them forge better relationships with other individuals.
