As a middle school mathematics teacher I often hear students ask “Why am I learning this?” or “ How will I use the math that I am learning today in my everyday life and exactly when will I start using it?”! It is in middle school when many students who don’t see the relevance of their math class can lose focus and realize too late the ‘point’ of the mathematics they are learning and its relevance. The requested Sphero programmable bots will be used by more than 60 mathematics students. 6th graders, for example, will program the bots to plot points on a grid and to find relationships between data points. For my 7th and 8th graders they will see math in action through visual or javascript programming and will use the bots to create lines of particular slopes. They will work in teams to create geometric shapes on a grid. Spheros convenient spherical shape enables many geometrical applications and of course some fun pi day activities which will be enjoyed by everyone! Once students are exposed to the basic e-tools and equipment, the application of the mathematics they have learned combined with their creativity will take them through problem solving pathways and learning experiences that will help them to truly see the 'point' of what they are learning. My students will jump at the chance to be robot task designers, master coders, kinesthetic learners of geometric concepts, team players, and problem solvers. Through hands-on learning my students will be solidifying their foundational math where at its best is going to support them through Calculus in high school and at its minimum will not get in the way of the pursuit of their dream careers.
