Students will get to use basic economics while showing compassion to their community. My students will research and find a need in our school or community. I have requested items to begin a t-shirt business for our 5th grade students. Students will create a plan to help fill the need they discovered through providing a service or supplies needed. Students will learn some important factors of economics and running a business by looking at supply and demand, deciding how and to whom to provide their product, profit margins, and create spreadsheets of orders, payments and deliveries. Students will design inspirational slogans or slogans to support their cause. These designs will be turned into t-shirts that the students will help produce and market. The money they make from the sales of the t-shirts will go back into the business to make it self-sustainable as well as provide them with funds to complete the original plan they created to fill a need in the community.
In addition to this being a economic project, it will increase students social/emotional learning as well. Students practice compassion in action, but this will be a chance to make a big impact. This will improve their self-efficacy and increase their sense of purpose. They will also get to see the contagious ripple effect one gift can make in the world.
