My first graders love to spend time reading and writing- it is a focus of our classroom. While I work with my small groups, students are engaged in independent reading, partner reading, independent writing, and collaborative writing. I set the bar high because I know that together we can achieve much. My classroom is filled with love and hard-working students. One way to keep student motivation high is by giving them choices. Flexible seating is one of the ways my students can have a voice and a choice during their day. We do not all perform our best sitting up straight at a desk. We have our preferences, and so do our students. Offering them alternative seating - comfortable soft options, stools at tables, on the floor with cushions, sitting with a lap tray, low tables, high tables, etc. is a way to allow students to explore and find out what works best for them. They learn about themselves in the process. They also learn to be responsible for choosing correctly, so that their choice does not distract but supports their learning. Furthermore, their motivation, engagement, and therefore success increase. With these flexible seating options I am asking for, my students will really be able to curl up with a good book, or hunker down and write that next best seller!
