"Long Way Down" by Jason Reynolds was recently published and exposes the harsh realities of cultural norms in some communities. It emphasizes the toxic downward spiral of revenge and how it affects families and the community. This novel is written in verse and is accessible to my students' various reading levels. I am hoping to read and discuss this novel in class to emphasize social and personal awareness. The theme of personal accountability and strength is consistent throughout the novel and puts into question the cultural norms and traditions that are passed down through generations. My students will consider the effects of certain actions and write letters to specific characters in the novel who became victims of revenge and violence.
