Science is a such a great subject for students to explore, experiment, and learn how their world and the world relate. I want our students to be able to feel like they are true scientists. Science teachers are obligated to provide students with safer and appropriate eye protection with safety glasses/goggles. Students being able to use a compass opens doors to being able to use more complicated tools in the STEM world. In order for our students to be able to participate with hands-on learning that is emphasized in the Next Generation Science Standards, they need to know that safety is key. They also need to know how to use different types of tools. Compasses may seem outdated in today’s world of MapQuest and GPS devices. Students knowing how to use this simple tool is still a valuable skill, and more importantly gives them a practical way to understand and relate to the cardinal directions.
