The calming corner will give my students a safe place to utilize during times of crisis or uncertainty. It will be warm and welcoming and filled with strategies and coping mechanisms to get him/her refocused. The net and lights will be used to present a calm, relaxing environment that is inviting for children. The seat cushions and pillows will provide comfortable options for getting cozy. The stress relieving activities and materials will afford my students several choices. The fidget toys will help the children refocus energy in a peaceful, less disruptive manner. There are many times throughout a school day when Kindergarten children just need a little break to engage in an activity of their choice. Little breaks of enjoyment will lead to a more productive class overall! Children love playing with toy cars, so the cars in the project will be used to help focus energy in a positive manner. Driving the cars on the carpet will help the children follow a path and keep focus. I added an organization cart to the project to organize the calming toys, so the children can learn how to independently use the calming corner. I will decorate the space with a strategy flip book that gives children paths to choose depending on the emotion they experience. I want this to be a safe, comfortable place for self regulation. My hope is that my students will learn coping mechanisms and calming strategies that they will utilize throughout their futures.
