My therapy room is in desperate need of a sand tray, sand, and miniatures. Often, students are hesitant to open up to a school social worker and require non-intrusive ways to engage. Sand tray therapy is a non-directive way to enhance the counselor-student relationship and improves mental health outcomes for individuals of all ages. Sand tray therapy allows the whole brain and body to be used to heal through touch, sight, and feeling. Children are able to work through significant traumatic experiences, overcome challenges, and discover solutions through work in the sand tray. Sand tray therapy provides opportunities to students to construct their own microcosm using miniature toys and sand. The scene created acts as a reflection of the person's own life and allows them the opportunity to resolve conflicts, remove obstacles, and gain acceptance of self.
