Why would a child need to use a calculator? There are so many reasons. When students do not have to worry about computation mistakes, they can focus on problem solving and math reasoning. Instead of becoming discouraged with tedious computations, students can spend their mental energy looking for patterns, checking estimates, and solving more complex problems. Calculators can help students at all levels learn more mathematically complicated material and improve student achievement. Efficient use of a calculator as a tool is a vital skill for students to have. Calculators have the added benefit of helping students to have a more positive attitude towards mathematics. Calculators benefit students at all levels, including students with learning needs and disabilities. Calculators help students with recognition learning, strategic learning, and effective learning. For students that struggle with basic computation, calculators offer the opportunity to learn higher-level skills and concepts. In addition, students with special learning needs can use calculators to participate in rigorous problem solving that might otherwise be too frustrating. Calculators are a wonderful and helpful tool that help students at all levels and points of their mathematical learning and development.
