Listening to books read aloud provides students with quality examples of fluency and expression as well as improves listening comprehension. I read to my students daily, but having the opportunity to hear examples of others reading aloud and modeling expression will help them to become more fluent readers with a higher level of listening comprehension. My Kindergarten students will be able to choose books from a wide variety of genres and topics that have already been purchased by the teacher. The students will have more opportunity to independently "read" the books that they find interesting if personal listening devices (CD players)are available in the classroom. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will help my students grow stronger in reading. The listening center will provide them with a level of independence that Kindergartners do not often receive.
