Students come into my room year-after-year lacking confidence. The first job I undertake is helping them to realize their own strengths, build a supportive classroom community, and encourage them to TRY. Writing is an area where my students struggle, and one of the main reasons is their fear of being incorrect. I see a pattern of hesitancy to write a word down when they are unsure of the spelling, difficulty starting a story because they are afraid it won't be good, and very short papers because of the perception it's better to be safe than sorry. The ability to brainstorm ideas, jot thoughts, and try out spelling difficult words using an interesting tool where mistakes disappear with the touch of a button will encourage risk-taking in writing and increase the willingness to TRY! These tablets would be used in my classroom for multiple purposes throughout the day. I already have plans to encourage students to jot their thoughts on LCD boards during read-aloud to share during text discussions. Students would be excited to see them during math and reading groups, and to brainstorm ideas for writing, reading responses, and spelling practice!
