Middle and high school students are not often read aloud to because it used to be seen as something to do with young children. However, there are significant benefits to reading aloud to students of all ages. I would like to be able to read aloud to my students with a class set of books so they can follow along as I read. My intention is to use books that reflect the experiences of my students so that they are able to see themselves in stories. All of my students are first-generation immigrants and many are refugees. I have chosen books about young people who have faced adversity or have immigrated. Beyond seeing themselves in stories, we will use the books to work on other literacy skills including writing, vocabulary, and reading.
