Flexible seating allows students the choice of how they learn best. This is a valuable skill for life when they grow and get careers of their own. By teaching students how to make successful choices it encourages them to recognize success in whatever they do. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: standing at the back counter, sitting under tables with clip boards, laying on the rug, using lap desks or bean bags. Allowing students to get up and out of their desks promotes engagement and a more comfortable learning environment for all. My students work better collaboratively and are more engaged when they are comfortable and feel they have a say in the classroom. The items that I have chosen will help my students by giving them independent choice during partner group or individual work. the microphone and speaker will provide them with an engaging way to make their voice heard. Many sixth graders struggle with fitting in and are often embarrassed to express themselves. By providing them with a fun way to voice their ideas to the class, all students can be heard! The yoga balls, wobble stools, and seat cushions are helpful for those students who can't sit still. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out. Students enjoy moving these around the room so they can find a quiet space to work and focus. The bands that go around the chairs will be available to all students who need to get extra energy out or like to swing/bounce when reading or writing. I have seen the positive affects of flexible seating and microphone use in the classroom. Students feel empowered to do their best when given choices.
