I believe reading this book will provide students with culturally relevant reading material that is reflective of the experience of the students we serve. It will definitely increase student engagement, provide opportunities to have rich discussions about resistance, police brutality, and self-examination. In our communities, students are affected by the injustices that occur. Families are broken apart, resources are scarce, and opportunities are limited. Some students have never read a book written by an author of color or had discussions about race. This is a necessary conversation to have with students because this is their reality and the reality we live in. This book provides an excellent opportunity for students to self reflect and to spark their interest in changing the communities and policies that exist to better serve all people.
