Flexible seating options allow students to choose what kind of seating helps them to be engaged, comfortable, and focused. I am a previous special education teacher and am transitioning to the general education classroom. With my special education background I will also be the cluster classroom for any first grade students with special needs. I have experienced first hand how providing various options for seating can make a huge difference in a students focus, behavior, and work completion.
As energetic first graders my students benefit from seating options that meet their individual needs. Fidget chair bands and wobble seats allow students who have trouble sitting still to move while working without distracting themselves or others from working. Donut seats can be used at sudent tables or at other centers around the room. I have included clipboards because somtimes a child's best work is not completed at a table or desk at all but rather at a spot on the floor, on a wobble stool, or in out classroom library area. By having a classroom set of clipboards students are able to work anywhere around the room.
I look forward to being able to allow my students to choose what seating option they feel works best for them. I'm excited to see students reading and working in all areas of our classoomroom individually or in groups opposed to being confined to just their desks.
