While doing Reading and Writing lessons, these art supplies will help engage the students with hands on learning and expressing themselves through art. Visualizing reading comprehension and actually painting pictures of reading passages really help students to gather their thoughts and express their creativity. Using art in short stories, personal narratives, argument writing, and even poetry is a great way for students to show their understanding in a concept and standard. With all the pressure on state testing, art is a struggle to fit in the curriculum. I feel that this is harmful in promoting self confidence and identity. I often have special education students among my regular education students as our state participates in having inclusion classes. I like having them in the class as I have seen the benefits of pushing them to catch up with participating higher level kids. I've experienced seeing some of the special education students even exiting out of the special education program as they no longer needed them! What progress! Art has definitely been attributed in their confidence and excitement to try and do difficult work assignments.
Having that one shy student come out of their shell is worth all the clean up, spills, chaos, and mess! Please help me push these kids to be good citizens and showcase ALL of their talents by being balanced and well rounded!
