There is no student that truly enjoys sitting in a hard plastic chair for 5-6 hours a day. The typical plastic chairs cause discomfort and distractions to students, especially ones with special needs. Children need to be able to move around during the day and flexible seating options are the perfect way to accomplish this while still delivering academic lessons. My students would benefit greatly from flexible seating options for many reasons.
It is proven that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance and improved behavior. The movement will increase oxygen and blood flow keeping them more alert and engaged. Flexible seating also gives my students the opportunity to make responsible choices and participate in collaboration with their peers.
Multiple students in my class have an ADHD or autism diagnosis, which means flexible seating is even more important to allow them to release some energy and have sensory exposure during all subjects of the day. Due to the self containment aspect of my classroom, my students have even less opportunity to move around during the day. Flexible seating helps me work around this problem without having to interrupt academic lessons.
