This project is an effort to enhance literacy in my scientific research class. I am proud to be part of a groundbreaking new STEM school that is the first of its kind in our town, county and state due to the population we will be serving. Our students population is 97% Hispanic , most are first generation American and live below the poverty level. These students are academically gifted and highly driven to succeed. I am starting a full time scientific research class where students will do their own self driven scientific research projects based on problems that they see in their lives, communities or the world around them. These projects are of high quality and competitive enough to go to local and state science fair competitions. When thinking about how to develop the full time class I realized I had to come up with creative and innovative ways to stimulate the kids curiosity and ways to open a dialogue for them to dive deeper, to stimulate them to come up with ideas for projects for them to continue to question. One way I came up with was to read about the experiences of other scientists. I am planning on setting aside Friday’s as reading/ discussion day while the other 4 days the students will be involved in their own lab projects. This project will also allow the students to interact and have discussions because By its very nature research is very isolating and solitary. By reading students will be interacting, discussing, expressing opinions, getting ideas and learning interpersonal skills. Reading these two books and helping to fund this project will be the start of a successful journey where I can add more books during the school year.
