Preschool is fundamental towards preparing students for a lifetime of love for learning. These planters, soil and seeds will be used towards not only beautifying our yard, but towards supporting our students' learning environment. Through planting a a center based garden the children will practice social skills and cooperatively problem solve as they collaborate with their teachers and peers towards growing beautiful flowers and nutritional vegetables for the center to enjoy.
This project will also support the students' math and science skills as they will have to count, measure, and explore the scientific process of playing with dirt. We will use picture books to introduce scientific terms and processes emphasizing the importance of reading as a learning tool. The act of gardening will overlap into lessons involving the insects that live in the dirt as well as the insects that feed off the plants such as bees and butterflies. We will use their interest in ecology to lead into lessons about environmental issues. This center based garden will assist us in instilling a love for learning but also respect for our planet.
